What started out as a simple desire to fill a few blessing boxes quickly turned into a service on a much greater scale when Jo Moorehead realized there was an immediate need to feed the community. She shares, “I noticed that perhaps blessing boxes were not being used to their greatest potential to feed many. So, my desire to feed more individuals emerged, and to bless people with a variety of foods and options. With the help of the entire community we launched “Bless and Feed Our Community” and here we are today.”

Individuals, organizations, churches, and businesses all assist in this partnership of feeding Greenbrier. Food, grants and monetary donations are what keep the organization thriving. On the 3rd Saturday of each month, from 8 to 10:30 AM or while supplies last, in the Dollar Tree parking lot, volunteers line up their vehicles in rows and individuals are allowed to go from car to car taking what they need. Each vehicle specializes in a unique category of food, making this a great opportunity to really allow patrons to take what they prefer and consume. On average the volunteers bless around 80-90 individuals who attend the event. The only requirement to receive this blessing is that they must live in Greenbrier.

“We’ve grown from around 11 original volunteers to around 40 each month, and again, it is only possible because of the amazing citizens within our community and their willingness to provide food for our community” she adds. “While we would love to open this up to other communities, we just do not have the resources to do so. We hope this inspires other communities to begin a program like this for their citizens.” Elisha Strick, one of the volunteers that has helped since the fruition of the community wide effort shares, “I volunteer by donating food because I believe it is a way to give back the blessings that God has generously given me. I am deeply grateful for all that I have, and I feel called to share with those in need. By helping to provide nourishment to others, I hope to not only meet their physical needs but also offer hope and a sense of community. Volunteering is my way of showing gratitude for God's love and abundance, and it brings me joy to serve others in this meaningful way.”

While it might look like they pull it all together just once a month, there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes daily to ensure each month the event is successful. Donations are collected constantly, and begin pretty much immediately for the following month after each event ends. Moorehead relies heavily on social media to get the word out about the event, and donation collection. The best way to donate or volunteer for this community wide effort is to join the “Bless and Feed Our Community Greenbrier AR” facebook group. There, you can view the needs and opportunities to get involved, or other resources.
